Late Easter Sunday and into the morning of April 13th, 2020, lives throughout the East Brainerd community were forever changed. Residents awoke to a devastating path of destruction left from an EF3 tornado. Multiple houses, businesses and community facilities had been leveled and/or severely damaged. One such community institution was the East Brainerd Elementary School (EBES).
EBES, built in 2015, provides instruction for nearly 1,200 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the surrounding East Brainerd community. The two story, 150,000 SF facility suffered major damage including multiple collapsed walls and the removal of most of the second floor roof. Thankfully, no one was in the building at the time of the tornado.
With the safety and well-being of the students and staff of EBES a top priority, Hamilton County Schools (HCS) was quick to respond. Within days, the district had a team of consultants assessing the building and site and had already begun the process of developing an action plan for the repair and reconstruction of the building.
MBI Companies, Inc. is pleased, once again, to be a part of a Hamilton County Schools A&E team along with Bennett & Pless (structural), Campbell & Associates (mechanical, electrical & plumbing), and the Christman Company (general contractor) to aid in facility assessments and reconstruction efforts.
Currently, the Christman Company is performing the arduous job of stabilizing the building and removing the damaged structural elements and debris. Once completed, the A&E team will further assess the building and site to develop a scope of work for reconstruction to begin.
As an on-going community service, MBI will continue to provide progress updates throughout the reconstruction process. Please check back regularly to stay informed of the latest milestones in the EBES efforts. For school district updates, please visit the Hamilton County Schools website at www.hcde.org/
